He studied at Burg Giebichenstein and Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. He was an teacher in typography, graphic and typedesign; he designed books and corporate designs and was one of the important typedesigners at Typoart Dresden (former GDR).

Together with Ole Schaefer he overworked and extended his most impotant text typefaces to become the Karl-Heinz Lange Collection released at primetype:
